The story flows like a spring through a forest and gives a tactile perspective to the love, loss, hatred, inhumanity and healing surrounding WW2. It really delves into the psychology of Nazi Germany expounding on the reasons people willingly handed their life to a despotic regime. The novel admirably develops the themes of the young woman’s tormenting guilt and hopelessness and then of the growing love between the American soldier and his rescuer.
