It is the story of Noah’s quest to fit in, to find a place in society, and his mischievous nature leads him to become immersed in petty crime. He is first introduced to this inner “animal instinct” when he is thrown out of a moving car (by his mother) in an effort to save his life. But, before you judge, remember, his existence was considered a crime due, so his mother acted quickly to protect his life. Throughout his youth, Trevor spends so much time dodging police officers solely for the crime of being born the wrong color. As he so eloquently reminds the reader, “It is easy to be judgmental about crime when you live in a world wealthy enough to be removed from it.” He reminds us that it is only by breaking down barriers that we can truly begin to understand.
