Her novel “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” is a whip-smart, hysterical dramedy about a family in crisis after the disappearance of its brilliant, misanthropic matriarch. The novel is by turns hilarious and touching. It skewers helicopter parents, high tech, and Seattle.

It also focuses on mother-daughter relationships, family dynamics, and creativity. The main characters, including Elgin the father and husband, are great. A different more sophisticated take on the mommy wars and the stresses of married life amongst the Seattle elite where you don’t hate all the characters for being privileged. Told from the point of view of Bernadette, her husband, and their precocious, but complex daughter each an original, sympathetic voice.
