She takes a complicated and difficult subject and explains both the science and historical/sociological background behind issues of racism and implicit bias in a way that a person with little technical knowledge of either psychology or sociology can readily understand.

Her use of personal experiences and anecdotes to help tell this story gave it even greater immediacy. The idea that a person does not have to be a racist to harbor biases that affect their attitudes and behavior, and potentially cause difficulty and harm to less-advantaged individuals and groups, is important to understand. Dr. Eberhardt does not present this reality in order to demonize people who hold biases without necessarily recognizing them. Instead, she persuasively argues that if the existence of such bias is not recognized, it can never be treated and its effects countermanded or overcome. In short, This book is a very impressive achievement.
