Married to her father’s heir at a young age, Lauren Berwycke is an unwanted child bride who comes with the land and title. Immediately after the vows are spoken, she is sent to a convent in France with her aged, quirky companion, Ellie Butterfield.

Time passes in peace and study until, years later, reading in the paper from England, the rumour of a divorce catches her attention. Fearing not only the scandal but the very real prospect that she will lose all she holds dear, Lauren is forced to make plans to return to her home and confront the old lord she briefly glimpsed through tear-stained eyes when she was just a child.

Having no luck finding the elusive husband in the busy city, she accepts an invitation to a masquerade ball. Donning her most daring gown, among the gracious elite of society, Lauren is indignant when she is indecently propositioned by a handsome rake, to become his mistress. The encounter will bring mistrust and life-changing results as the rogue delights in the challenge of capturing her heart.

From the busy social scene of London to the quiet of Barwick Castle, a change has transformed the estate under the new management. However, Todd Harrington is one of the tenants who is not at all happy with the extra work that comes with prosperity. He joins forces with Lauren’s step-family, Agnes Etherington and her son John Marlow, who hold old grievances to seize the Barwick estate along with its wealth and position in society. Thievery and mayhem plague the area.

About the Author

Cathrine started her career as a secretary until she realized her first dream to become a wife, mother and now, grandmother.

Her second dream came about when she opened an all-breed boarding and training kennel where she bred and showed Champion Labrador Retrievers under the Embrace prefix. At the time, she wrote an Owner’s Information Manual to be given to her clients that explained the stages a puppy will go through in its life, what behaviours to watch for, and what training should be taught at each stage.

Her artistic nature led her to dream number three: becoming a professional artist. Her designs were sold at quaint specialty shops in rural Ontario. During this time, she designed and acted as general contractor and built a log home that she and her husband ran as a Bed and Breakfast, welcoming guests from around the world.
