The Stone dragons part. The first thing I see is a man encased in stone atop a dragon. One of those wingless kinds from the Xi! The next glance made me drop from my dragon only a second before Hu’gan did. “It’s Sezalor! He’s been flamed! Did you kill our dragon?”
One Stone dragon blinked rapidly, understanding the threat in his own language. “No! We came upon the battle. We got here too late. One dragon and man escaped as we locked these two in stone. The feathered dragon was already down and being circled by the others. We—tried to get to him in time. He’s badly injured.”
“You mean dead, don’t you?” I collapse near Sezalor. The stench of burnt feathers and scales turns my stomach.
“He still lives. Injured badly, yes. Our healer may save him. I am Weithorn. We were on guard duty when we saw the dragons from faraway lands and followed them. My friends will help me carry your dragon to our home to care for him.”
“Wait. Where is the girl? She would have been riding the dragon.”
Weithorn tilted his head, puzzled. “There was no girl here. Only the other dragons and the bad men. One escaped in battle, but had no female with him.”
“Then she must be here, somewhere.” I run towards the trees calling, “Belinda! It’s me, Grifton. Come out. You are in protection. Hu’gan is here also. Sezalor is hurt. Come to me, Belinda!”
I stand to listen. It feels like my legs have rooted to the ground. Then I catch movement through the trees. A shaking of a branch, the crunch of leaves. I squint to see where she could be when a streak of darkness barrels out of the trees and plasters against me. Belinda. She looks like a forest witch with leaves and twigs jutting every direction in her hair and her dirt smudged face only clean where the tears have streamed.
“The Xi. They killed Sezalor.” She gushed the words out between tears and slobbering on my shoulder.
“Shh. All is not lost. The Stone dragons have a healer they think can save Sezalor. They will carry him to their home. We will go too. I’ll stay as long as it takes to save your dragon.”
“We were on our way there, to the land of the Stone dragons. I’ve made a mess of things, but Sezalor helped me sort through it. We were…” Belinda broke down in tears sliding down my chest to my feet.
“We’ll work through all of this later. Come. Athan can carry us both. Let’s get Sezalor the help he needs. At least he’ll have a chance. Don’t you want that for him?”
“Of course! Anything! Please, anything, just save him.” Belinda pleaded, looking at the Stone dragons.

About the Author

Cheryl has been a writer for decades but officially started publishing her works in 2017. When asks when she decided she wanted to become a writer her answer surprised us.

“It may have all started when I was a small child and had an imaginary cat. I knew exactly what it looked like, where I last left it and took it to customers of my mother’s and had them pet my cat. I would also play outside and make small villages out of twigs and grass and use stones as people. I loved to imagine what they did every day. So I guess I have always been ‘a writer’, it just took me many years to actually write the stories I made up in my mind.”
