In this memoir book, Esmeralda describes her childhood. When she was a child, she lived in a hand to mouth family. She learned the proper way to eat a guava, the sound of tree frogs, and the formula for ushering a dead baby’s soul to heaven.

This book was surprisingly well written and a delightfully fast read. But her mother takes off to New York with her seven. There she learns new rules, a new language, met with new people, and eventually a new identity. To know about further of Santiago’s life, read this interesting biography book. The beautiful and sometimes heartbreaking description of her life was memorizing, so I recommend this book to anyone interested in a being transcended into the Puerto Rican culture. All in all, When I Was Puerto Rican is an amazing biography book for the readers.
