Description of In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson PDF

“In a Sunburned Country” is a charming biography of Shakespeare based on the fact that we know next to nothing about the man. Bill Bryson is the author of this book. Bill Bryson is a master storyteller, and this is his opus. His descriptions are beautiful, his perspectives poignant. The few times where Bryson (and Katz, half the time) wanders out of the forest into a tourist trap or a lodge makes you feel green and bright-eyed. The book dips in and out of modernity and “nature” (as socially constructed as it may be). The book starts out with a midlife decision to take a walk. It takes us to a funny scene in the local outdoor goods shop, and then through the woods with the overweight, bumbling Katz and a hilarious cast of characters they meet along the way.

Bryson covers many subjects in this nonfiction account of his adventures and misadventures on the Appalachian Trail. Some of the most interesting topics are the history and geography of the AT, the trail culture, the endless fires of anthracite coal, and the history of the flora and fauna of the AT. I was off put by his stereotypical, cliché descriptions of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Tennesseans, and southerners. In short, this is still a rewarding read to learn about a somewhat hidden part of America.
