Jennifer Egan is the author of this classy novel. Anna Karrigan is a small girl living in the town of America. She is living with her father and her father mostly out of the town. When she was twelve years old her father takes her to meet with Dexter Styles. She does not know why her father does this and after some time her father disappears. Now the country is in a crucial stage and the war just begins. Anna was also there to serve her nation and she starts working on Brooklyn Naval Yard.

In this unit, the women are doing all the jobs that once belonged to the men soldiers. Due to war, the soldiers are out of the city and at the borders. This task has to be done and they are doing it quite easily. Anna got the post of diving and she was the first woman to do this job. It was tough but not the toughest. She is living on the line while repairing the ships, making free the occupations and these were the things which will make America win. Anna also meet with Dexter Styles here and he has some valid point for her.
